where it all began
ZEM was born in September 2022 from the desire of its two co-founders to share their passion for Brazilian Zouk by offering, in Montreal, different ways to learn, practice, participate, socialize, share, and grow together through this dance and the vibrant community that emerges from it.

Our approach is rooted in a deep understanding of the body, movement and fluidity.
We teach a conscious, ergonomic, and accessible dance, where every gesture is built in respect of the body’s natural mechanics.
Ergonomics and body awareness at the heart of movement
Our teaching respects the body’s natural mechanics: continuity, comfort, and precision.
We develop awareness of the central axis, weight transfers, spinal mobility, and fluid transitions for a more conscious and safe dance.
A progressive, detailed and accessible pedagogy
Our pedagogy is based on clear, detailed and progressive explanations that help dancers understand, feel and integrate each concept.
Attention to micro‑movements, axes, directions, and subtle adjustments transforms both the quality and the fluidity of the movement.
A welcoming and supportive learning environment
ZEM is a place where dancers progress without pressure and at their own pace, where exploration happens without judgment and where people dance with confidence in a warm and supportive environment.
Our vision of Brazilian zouk
For us, Brazilian Zouk is a living art, a form of non‑verbal expression — a space of freedom, creativity and presence.
As with any language, you first learn the words — the foundations, the technique, the principles — before you can compose your own sentences, find your voice and your freedom of expression.
meaning of ZEM
Z for zouk, as you probably could imagine!
E for… expression, element, evolution, energy, event, embrace, euphoric, education, emotional… and a multitude of other words!
In fact, the E had a different meaning for the two co-founders… and we realized that this is also the case with zouk: it brings something unique to each of us! This is why we purposely don’t define the E, we actually let each one of you define what it means to you! With this in mind, ZE will aim to promote, through its various activities, different variations of zouk.
