ZEM Weekender 2024: Brazilian Zouk Weekend in Montreal

Dates & Key Information

ZEM Weekender 2024 took place from Friday, April 5 to Sunday, April 7, 2024. It was an immersive weekend dedicated to Brazilian Zouk.

Weekend Program

Brazilian Zouk weekender in Montreal showcased, for the 2024 edition, two charming Polish artists: Dominik & Monika!

They offered a total of 5 hours of workshops throughout the weekend:

2 progressive workshops of 1h30 each on Saturday

2 pre-social workshops of 1h on Friday and Saturday evenings

Participants also had the chance to see them on the dance floor during one of the three socials held that weekend (Friday night, Saturday night, and Sunday afternoon)!

Ticket Options & Pricing

With the aim of keeping a balanced lead/follow ratio, we launched our first lot of social passes (which included all three socials: Friday and Saturday nights, and Sunday afternoon).

A second lot was only released once the first had sold out — spots were limited!

We also launched our first lot of full passes at regular price, again with the goal of maintaining a balanced lead/follow ratio. These spots were also limited!

  • Monika and Dominik started their dance journey at the age of 12, and today they are recognized as pioneers of Brazilian Zouk in Katowice (Poland), the city where they currently live. Since 2014, they have been dedicated to building a community of Brazilian Zouk dancers in their hometown.

In 2021, they took and passed the certification exam in the MAC Project, a course on the methodology of teaching Brazilian Zouk created by Alex de Carvalho, in Paris. This achievement made them the first certified Brazilian Zouk instructors in Southern Poland.

In 2022, they broke another barrier by becoming the first Polish couple in the history of Brazilian Zouk to teach fully in Portuguese at a festival in Brazil. Monika and Dominik taught at two festivals in total - the Summer Zouk in Rio, organized by Renata Peçancha herself, and the International Zouk Congress (IZC), the largest festival in São Paulo. They were also invited to teach in Hanoi and Montreal, becoming the first European couple in the history of Brazilian Zouk to teach in Vietnam and Canada.

At the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, Monika and Dominik returned to Brazil once again to teach Brazilian Zouk. As one of the few European couples to do so, they taught once more at the International Zouk Congress (IZC) and for the first time at the Ramalhos Zouk Festival. In 2023 they were chosen to create a choreography for the International Zouk Flashmob Day 2023 as representatives of Europe and as one of just three couples internationally.

Their passion for Brazilian Zouk continues to take them around the world, spreading their love for this dance wherever they go. Over the past few years, they have had the privilege of teaching Brazilian Zouk in various countries such as the United Kingdom, Spain, Germany, Austria, the Netherlands, Scotland, Portugal and the Czech Republic.

In Poland, Monika and Dominik have helped to organize the first editions of the Silesian Zouk Festival and are main organizers of the Katowice Zouk Meetup. They seize every opportunity to spread their passion for Brazilian Zouk among new people. Their ultimate goal is to showcase the beauty of Brazilian Zouk and inspire more people to fall in love with this dance. During their classes, they focus on technique, musicality, countless movement possibilities, and the fun that comes with dancing Brazilian Zouk.
